Can too much sleep cause depression?

the other day I was Googling some things and came across some articles that hypothesize that getting too much sleep can actually lead to depression, rather than being a symptom of it. Or maybe it is circuitous. While there may still be a lot of controversy about whether or not this is true, here are some very interesting articles for your consideration:

Too Much Sleep Can lead to Restless Nights- this article says that people who get too little sleep and people who get too much sleep report the same types of sleep problems! Scarily, it says there have been reports about people who get too much sleep being more at risk for death! Ahhhh! As if I don't have enough to be phobic about! Well if this doesn't get me to quit it with the snooze button nothing will!

List of articles about the link between sleep and depression: interestignly enough, total sleep deprivation has been shown to reduce depression symptoms in 40-60% of treatments. Of course this is not wise nor practical, nor a long lasting solution, but very interesting nonetheless.

Circadian Rhythms and Depression: interesting because I have long suspected my own body clock is out of whack!

Incidentally, depression can cause carb craving.

Based on my research, I have decided to practice waking up early this weekend instead of attempting a 'rest cure'. I think I would be better off in the long run by learning to get less sleep and wake up earlier in the morning.

Also, sometime next week I plan on practicing a new goal of mine- to stop watching tv. I am going to start by giving it up one day a week, cause I am into baby steps, you know! Whats exciting and different is that I am not going to use the television for anything, even for just a light in the room while falling asleep. I will have to ::gasp!:: read a book or something!

Thanks for the article and links. I googled it when I got the same suspicion. I know from experience that if I wake up pretty rested and mildly depressed, and decides to sleep more, I'll wake up and get *really* depressed!

And last year I had a month of back pain which took a lot of my sleep away. You'd think I'd be a mess, but I was actually pretty jolly!

I have been suffering from gen anxiety and depression and been taking meds for about 10 years now. I came across your blog while searching for info about to much sleep and depression. When my depression is at its peak I could (if not for having to work about 2 hours a day for myself)stay in bed for days with the exception of rare bathrooom breaks. I have used this as a coping mechanizim. I am married and have an 11 year old son and a bunch of dogs. When my dep is at its peak sleeping is the ONLY THING I want to do. Then I get very anxious when I know I have to get up. I want to thank you for your blog. I found it very helpful. I want my life back. I know it won't be easy at first but I now know for sure that sleeping in (as often as possible) and staying in bed for days is not the answer and is mostly definitly making my depression worse. Thanks again:)

I'm a grad student and during the semester when my schedule forces me to get up and stay awake during the day I have far fewer episodes of severe depression than I do between semesters when I sleep too much. For me, excessive sleep definitely is a trigger.

OMG!! Thank you so much for the links to articles. I found that if I sleep no more than 4 hours at once (twice a day), that my whole world changes. The difference in my mood goes from suicidal to having a good day! I am currently on antidepressants as well—wellbutrin (bupropion) and using deplin as an enhancer. Figuring out that sleep deprivation helps has been one of the most important revelations of my life.

"Can too much sleep cause depression?" Absolutely! I have experienced this first hand. Since I have started working two jobs, my sleep has become vey regimented. I hardly ever get to sleep-in.

These past few weeks I slept in and woke up feeling very depressed and anxious. I remember feeling that same way when I was younger and sleeping in all of the time. If I get more than 9 hours of sleep I wake-up feeling awful: very depressed, hopeless, frightened and thinking about unpleasant things from the past. Those feelings were very distinct and now I know that it was from sleeping too much!

I noticed that If I really need to sleep in, it is best for me to get one hour more of sleep only. I take a half-hour power nap during my lunchbreak in my car during the week.

Be sure to exercise and get some sun. Eat highly nutritious foods. Also, pray to God. It really helps!

Just be careful not to become overly dependent on drugs from a psychiatrist. Sometimes depression stems from a medical problems, such as low thyroid. Be sure to get a physical.
